Original finished Chantrell artwork (19"x 25") for the Quad cinema poster for the Mexican action-adventure film "Pancho Villa" (1972).

Chantrell experimented with a completely different design (https://www.chantrellposter.com/Pancho-Villa-Chantrell-Poster-Artwork-1972-Original/976) before creating this fascinating composition. Chantrell includes a photographic mock-up of a newspaper as the background to the colourful painted action scene superimposed on top. This device was similar to Chantrell's earlier poster design for "Patton" (1970) (https://www.moviepostermem.com/Patton-Poster/61419) where the action & film title were set against the background of a wartime map. Ever the resourceful commercial artist Chantrell used this design feature in several other poster designs too. Comparison with the printed poster (https://www.chantrellposter.com/Pancho-Villa-Chantrell-Quad-Poster-1972-Original/546) shows this to be a rare piece of finished Chantrell artwork.

The newspaper text on the artwork is mostly photo-mechanical. Cut-out photos have been added along with the film title & cast/credits text which are on printed strips. Thereafter the action sequence & flag has all been painted & Chantrell has signed his name in pencil to the bottom left rim. The composition is on thick artboard which in turn is mounted on "Legion" artboard which has been painted black. Chantrell was pleased with this work, evidenced by both his signature & the fact that he had this piece framed & displayed in his home.
