An original piece of pre-production concept artwork for "Warlords of Atlantis" (1978) by the renowned production designer Maurice George Carter (1913-2000). The watercolour is set into a mount (16 1/2"x 23" overall) & carries the text "Ext. Step Temple" & "Atlantis" underneath, with the piece signed & dated (76) by MG Carter. According to Sim Branaghan (see "British Film Posters" 2006), "Warlords of Atlantis" had a torturous development with various title name changes before making it onto the big screen. Although Josh Kirby was responsible for the Quad poster for the film, Chantrell was responsible for the first VHS design (as shown) & would have used the Carter artwork for reference purposes (though the temple imagery was not ultimately used).
MG Carter had an illustrious career in film being nominated for 2 Oscars ("Anne of a Thousand Days" 1970 & "Becket" 1965) & 3 BAFTA's & worked on numerous films, including "The Land That Time Forgot" (1975) & "The People That Time Forgot" (1977). Carter also designed sets for the unmade James Bond film "Warhead" (1978), Christie's selling one such concept piece for £3,500 in 2009 (image courtesy of christies.com).
