More about this item:
Chantrell finished painted artwork (18 1/2"x 27 1/2") for the Quad poster for "The Miracle" (1959).This is an interesting piece for several reasons. First it is
a relatively rare surviving piece of 50's Chantrell artwork.
It is also a particularly good example exhibiting a number of "trademark" Chantrell techniques: the impressive "statement" graduated film title, the bold & vibrant use of colour, the sense of dynamism & the black outlining of characters (in the foreground). Several of these foreground figures have also been applied as painted cut-outs (another favoured technique used by Chantrell). We show an image of the Quad poster for reference - the cast/credits info would have been added later on an acetate overlay (image courtesy of

This composition is also noteworthy for another reason. Chantrell usually had the benefit of previewing films prior to creating posters for them. In addition he liked to work from reference photos.
In the case of "The Miracle", however, Chantrell did not see the film & perhaps lacked reference images too. The splendid composition he created features a backdrop of an exciting battle scene, though the film was essentially a period romantic drama (providing future "James Bond"
Roger Moore with his first lead role). A letter of complaint was eventually passed to Chantrell by a father who took his son to see the film expecting an exciting battle adventure & was aggrieved to find something rather different to that which the poster had suggested! Nonetheless, Chantrell was pleased with this composition as it was both
signed & also displayed for many years in a frame in his home.
Artwork is gouache, colour wash, painted cut-out additions & a small black card border at the base, all applied to "Whatman" artboard.
