More about this item:

An original Chantrell illustrated Hammer studios promotional flyer (8"x 10 1/4") for "The Scars of Dracula" (1970). Together with the flyer are 4 original b/w studio photos of posed shots that were used by Chantrell for reference (all 5 items to be sold together). The existence of these photos gives some idea of the care the artist took in ensuring that his illustrations were accurate & informed.

Though Chantrell was responsible for all Hammer Quad posters during the period 1965-70, Chantrell also worked during this period & for several years thereafter producing artwork used in financing pitches & for the production of promotional flyers such as this. Invariably, Chantrell's prototype designs featured more gratuitous nudity than that which was permissable on finished Quad posters. The illustration for this flyer bears no resemblance to the Quad (which was eventually illustrated by artist Mike Vaughan) but the figure of the over-bearing Dracula figure in the background has clear echoes of Chantrell's design for "Dracula Has Risen From The Grave" (1968) a point also made in the Marcus Hearn book "The Hammer Vault" (2011). This book carries an image of the actual artwork for the flyer which apparently shows it to have been lighter in tone than the printed version we have here.
