A fascinating find, this being a small b/w polaroid photo (3 1/2"x 4 1/4") of Chantrell's prototype artwork for "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980). Following his success in supplying the Quad poster for "Star Wars" (1977) (which has pretty much become the standardised logo for the "Star Wars" brand), Chantrell was asked to supply a prototype for the 1980 sequel. The photo shows an image of this now "lost" artwork, though a full colour version is shown below (courtesy of http://starwarsaficionado.blogspot.co.uk/).

Though Chantrell clearly supplied a fabulous piece, it remained unused, the reason being the prominence given to "Luke Skywalker". Chantrell was disappointed as he felt he was not given a correct enough steer as to the relative character weightings in the film. Thereafter most "ESB" posters carried one of two Tom Jung designs but a small number of so-called "Gone With The Wind" US 1-Sheets (art by Roger Kastel) were used too. It is clear to see where the inspiration for this design came from! (image courtesy of emovieposter.com)
