Original near-finished Chantrell artwork (24"x 31 1/2") for the Quad cinema poster for the Swedish drama "The Emigrants" (1970).

As comparison with the printed poster shows (https://www.chantrellposter.com/The-Emigrants-Quad-Poster-Original/266) this is a near-finished piece of artwork (some further colour was added to the artwork on the lower border & the text block to the upper right would have been carried on an acetate overlay). Prior to settling on this particular design Chantrell created a different prototype (https://www.chantrellposter.com/The-Emigrants-Chantrell-Quad-Artwork-1970-Original/1061) & although this failed to pass muster, a number of elements were carried over into the final design.

The artwork is a mixture of pastels (the photo-realist illustration of Max Von Sydow & Liv Ullmann) & watercolour/pencil illustration along the bottom border. The text is carried in printed strips which have been applied to the artbord. Chantrell added a card mount to the rim prior to framing this piece & displaying it in his home. The artist has signed the composition in pencil to the lower border (under the burning building). A fine example of Chantrell's artistry.
