More about this item:
Original Chantrell painted artwork (11 1/4"x 15 1/2") for Hammer Studios film "One Million Years BC" (1966), this being a pre-production creation c' 1965.
Almost uniquely among British cinema poster artists, Chantrell was employed to create pre-production artwork for mooted films (these for Hammer Studios). In some cases the artwork depicted a proposed poster, this used to try & secure American funding (in these cases the artwork was generally for too explicit to ever make it into print). Other examples, as here, were for pre-production marketing materials (flyers/pamphlets etc). In this particular case the fur clad bikini cavewoman looks nothing like Raquel Welch, indicating the pre-production aspect of the work (Ms Welch not even being cast at this stage).
The artwork is a mixture of colour wash & gouache. The film title has been applied on a separate hand-painted cut-out & the "This Is a Hammer Film" sticker bottom right is a photo-mechanical print. The artwork is on artboard & is protected with a tracing paper overlay. An important piece of Chantrell artwork for one of Hammer Studios most memorable films.
