More about this item:

A fascinating piece of original artwork (17"x 22") for this unmade Hammer film.

Christopher Lee was interested in this story of the real life 19th century Zulu King & proposed the film to Hammer. Having had success previously with Rider Haggard's "She" (1965), Hammer were also interested. In time honoured fashion, Hammer turned to Chantrell for some pre-production artwork & this piece was created. The use of a "masonry title" was a common Chantrell device (ie, "She" - Quad image courtesy of www.moviepostermem.com) & the image was complemented by a rank of blood dripping spears underneath. Chantrell obviously also wanted to reap a marketing advantage by associating the Hammer film with the hugely successful Stanley Baker/Michael Caine film "Zulu" (1964) as the comparison shows (image courtesy of www.fiskenposter.com). Originally, the artwork carried superimposed text to the upper left reading "This Is A Hammer Film" but this has subsequently become detached & been lost. In the event, Hammer never made "Chaka Zulu" though ironically Christopher Lee did appear in a TV series "Shaka Zulu" which emerged in 1986.
